I just returned from 2 graduation ceremonies. They are basically the same as in the USA with some differences of course. Instead of each student walking across the stage and then pausing for pictures, etc., students have their names read off quickly and they walk across shaking hands with their major professors and the president.
Hundreds of graduates walk across in just a few minutes with this procedure. One representative student received the diploma for all, probably the student body president, but nor sure. No pictures are taken of each student as they walk, so again, it is a very fast and I think efficient process. Otherwise, it would take 2 hours just to have them all walk and pause like in the USA. 2 ceremonies were necessary due to the number of students graduating, around 1,000 or so.
Outside the building tents were set up offering food and flowers for purchase which many took advantage of. It seemed strange for graduation to be 2 months after the semester ended. It also seemed strange that sleet and snow were falling from a winter sky making a real mess outside.
I couldn't help but think of the influence this university has had on these graduates. Some of them have been exposed to 4 years of Christian chapels, and hopefully Christian educators. What will their future hold? One thing is certain, I believe the church has given them the best chance for a good positive Christian life. I can only pray along with the rest of the leadership here that none will ever forget the Christian challenge and the Christian impact they felt while getting their education. And, we have had a small piece of this. I have had 2 students travel from Seoul in recent days to to have me help them with paperwork so they can study in the USA. I feel honored to help them and to have their confidence.
Congratulations grads! You earned it!!
