Chinese supper

It was an interesting evening with some of our new Chinese students cooking.  These four wanted a home cooked meal so we fixed some American dishes and they prepared some Chinese foods.  It was fun to teach them to use a potato peeler which they had never seen or used before.  When we sat down to eat they didn't understand why we had put plates in front of them!  We forgot that many Asian cultures do not put food on a plate like we do.  Instead, they usually just eat out of common dishes.  We had to explain to them the American culture  of eating out of individual plates.  Their English is fairly good so communication was not a big problem.

I have 2 of the students in my class, the boy and the girl in the yellow sweatshirt.  They are both excellent students with high level English skills.  They help me communicate with my class.

A funny story about these 4 is that they went to Seoul a week ago on a subway, and got lost because they all slept through their transfer station!  They wound up near Incheon Airport, the far end of the line.  They got back to Cheonan too late to get into the dorm so spent the night at a coffee house until the dorm opened up again at 4 a.m.  Interesting culture here on that issue.

Their favorite dish tonight was the dessert, banana bread with vanilla pudding.  They were already full but when they tasted the bread they went for it, again and again.  They loved it.  With a little effort the Chinise students seem to be easily befriended.  My good friend LiPing, also from China and who graduated in February, called me just last night wanting to have dinner together.  We had to decline since we were in Seoul at the time.  We are so fortunate to have so many as our good friends.
