I have been thinking about Genesis 2 (thanks to C. Baxter Kruger) where God tells Adam and Eve that the day they eat from the forbidden tree they will die. I admit I have hardly preached from the verse because it has never made much sense to me. If I am not mistaken they did not die THAT DAY! At least, not literally. They went on to live and have a family. Did God change His mind? Or, do I not understand something here?
I have understood this verse to mean that since they didn't die THAT DAY, the dying process began THAT DAY. Of course, this isn't what God said, but we make it say that for it to make sense to what we think is the meaning of the text. We certainly can not say that God changed His mind since theology has taught us from day one that God never can do that since God never changes, ever! (Hum?)
I have also understood the text to say that God did not mean they would die physically, but spiritually THAT DAY ( I wish God would mean what He says and make it clear!) Some of us can live with that one better. At least somehow they died that day and that clears God of any change or ambiguity on His part. But no one has really explained to me what that means--to spiritually die while being physically alive. I read books on this idea but they all say something different and I am convinced no one really knows, exactly that is.
So what did die on THAT DAY, if anything?
I love to watch "The Princess Bride." I know I am corny and I just disappointed those who thought ministers only watched movies like "The Passion," and such. I even listen to secular radio stations and go to secular Karaokes (noraebong, in Korea) with students and "sway" (I did not say "dance") with the music. Boy, am I a disappointment to some! But, back to my story.
Early in the movie Princess Buttercup (I love her name) finds out that her one true love (she called him "Farm Boy," you gotta love it!) has been killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. She gets depressed and does not eat or sleep. Later, when she thinks she is talking to the Dread Pirate Roberts, who killed him, she laments, "I died THAT DAY!" Hum? What did she mean? Maybe she gives us a good interpretation of what happened to Adam and Eve, and us, in Genesis 2. If so, then what did Christ do for us? That, of course, is another blog, or blogs.
